Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Outlines Measures to Mitigate Regional Impact on Tourism

Amman, Jordan – In an interview with Al-Mamlaka TV, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Dr. Emad Hijazin, addressed the repercussions of the current regional developments on the tourism sector.

He stated that from the very first moment, an emergency room was established to monitor the impact of these events on bookings, air traffic, and the airspace, with the goal of ensuring business continuity.

Dr. Hijazin acknowledged that while tourism in Jordan has been affected by the regional circumstances, the sector continues to work on reassuring global tourism markets and affirming the Kingdom's readiness to welcome visitors.

He confirmed that the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities is in constant coordination with stakeholders in the tourism sector to monitor the evolving regional situation and its impact on travel movement and the tourism industry, and to take the necessary measures to support the sector.

The Minister pointed out that previous experiences in the tourism sector have underscored the importance of diversifying tourism markets and not relying solely on traditional ones. He emphasized the need to continue maintaining these markets while strengthening Jordan's presence within them. He also noted that ongoing efforts are being made to promote overland tourism from Gulf countries, given its significance and major role in supporting tourist traffic to the Kingdom.

Dr. Hijazin revealed that within the next few days, new tourism packages targeting alternative markets will be announced, aiming to enhance Jordan's position as a distinguished tourist destination in the region. He also mentioned that the Ministry has decided to activate the "Urduna Jana" program starting the second day of Eid al-Fitr, directing it to support the areas most affected by the regional conditions, particularly the city of Petra. This initiative aims to boost tourist movement and support local communities.

Regarding measures to support the tourism sector, Dr. Hijazin explained that the Jordan Tourism Board has decided to allow the installment or deferment of fees owed by tourism establishments that contribute to the Board until the last quarter of this year. This step is intended to alleviate financial burdens on the sector.

He further clarified that the Ministry, in cooperation with its partners in the sector, is working to study and assess the extent of the damage incurred by the tourism industry. This assessment will help in setting clear priorities for support programs in the upcoming phase.

The Ministry is also coordinating with relevant authorities concerning obligations related to social security and the banking sector, taking into account the specific circumstances and financial standing of each establishment.

Dr. Hijazin noted that the recovery experience following the COVID-19 pandemic provided important lessons in crisis management. These insights will be leveraged to develop a "Day One" recovery plan to be implemented once the current regional events subside, ensuring a gradual and sustainable return of tourism activity.

He concluded by stating that the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities is continuing to implement the empowerment program for the tourism sector. This program focuses on training and capacity building through three main tracks: training job seekers, upskilling current employees in the tourism sector, and developing the skills of tourism service providers. The objective is to raise the efficiency of the workforce and enhance employment opportunities, ensuring the sector's full readiness to receive tourists during the recovery phase following the conclusion of the current regional developments.
